AVG has today released details of several spam emails being sent in the branding of CNN.com and BBC which are being used to link to exploits online. The messages refer to the ongoing Cyprus Bailout news story and false news stories regarding the Pope. There are several ways these emails can be spotted including the use of exclamation marks in the subject.

CNN Email

The email directs the reader to a website which will use a Java exploitation to download a rootkit and infect the user’s machine. Researchers from AVG have found several domains being used to link to the infection, and have pointed out that several link to the page “/popesued.html”.

Please be aware of these fake links that are likely to be spread not only via email, but also using shortlinks and fake accounts using social media.
