Microsoft is forcing users to install SP1 for Windows 7 via Windows Updates as the end date for Windows 7 RTM support gets closer. Users previously had to download the Service Pack from Microsoft’s website.

Windows Update will release SP1 over the coming weeks in preparation for support ending for Windows 7 without SP1 on 9th April.

Microsoft commented in a blog post detailing the plans, “Updating customers to Windows 7 SP1 is part of our ongoing effort to ensure continued support and improved security updates” for customers who have not yet installed SP1,”

It is recommended that people prepare for the update by ensuring their computers are ready for the Service Pack. 64-bit machines will require 1GB free space and 32-bit will require 750GB for the installation, however most of that space will be reclaimed after the install. We would also point out that the update could take some time, so laptop users should plug their machines into a power source to ensure there are no interruptions to the installation process.
